China basics for a Shaolin trip

The Shaolin Temple stands near Dengfeng in Henan, about two hours by direct bus from Zhengzhou. Most problems for first-time visitors do not happen at the temple. They happen before: entry rules, payment and internet access.

This site is independent. It is not run by the temple, the scenic area or any authority, and rules change, so each fact below carries its date. If a rule matters for your trip, confirm it with the embassy or consulate of your country before you book.

Entry and visa rules

Status as of October 2026. Check the date before you rely on any of it.

Visa-free entry

According to the Chinese embassy in Germany (FAQ of 13 November 2025), holders of an ordinary German passport can enter without a visa for tourism, business, visits, exchange or transit for up to 30 calendar days, counted from the day after arrival. The rule runs until 31 December 2026. The same FAQ names several other countries, among them France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Australia and New Zealand. Do not assume it covers your nationality.

The passport

The rule needs an ordinary passport that stays valid for the whole planned stay. Provisional, emergency and other travel documents are excluded.

Longer stays and study

For a stay over 30 days, apply for a suitable visa before you travel. An extension at the local exit and entry office is possible if good reasons arise later, but it is not automatic. Short study trips and summer or winter camps of up to 30 days fall under the visa-free rule. Study, work and journalism do not. If you plan a long kung fu course, read the martial arts schools page first.

240-hour transit

The 240-hour (10-day) transit rule needs an eligible nationality, a valid travel document and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. A simple round trip between the same two places does not qualify. In November 2025 the list of entry ports grew from 60 to 65. A Zhengzhou notice from December 2024 described entry through Zhengzhou including travel within Henan, but it is old. Check the current national rules.

Passports, tickets and trains

Names and documents have to match.

Carry the original passport

The UK Foreign Office advises carrying the original passport. Copies are not accepted at checks. You also show the passport to buy a train ticket and to travel by train.

Tickets use real names

Many Chinese ticket systems link a ticket to a name and an ID number. The name on the booking must match your passport. No single procedure for foreign passports at Shaolin applies to every date, so ask your accommodation or check the current process before you go. In July 2025 an announcement that tickets would be sold online only was withdrawn. Old guides that say WeChat is the only way are out of date.

Extras cost extra

The electric cart inside the area costs CNY 15 (about $2) one way in a 2026 travel programme. It is optional and not part of the basic ticket. Cable cars on Mount Song are priced separately. See tickets and prices.

Paying in China

Mobile wallets are the norm, cash is the backup.

MethodWhat to knowWatch out
Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign cardA Shanghai government guide confirms you can link suitable foreign cards without a Chinese bank account. Visa and Mastercard are named.Generally no fee up to CNY 200 (about $28) per payment. Above that, a fee of 3 percent of the total may apply. Limits of up to $5,000 per payment and $50,000 per year are quoted, but your app shows your own limits.
Bank cardAccepted in many hotels and larger shops. No source shows that every card works at every ticket window.
CashStill usable in many places.Carry some as a backup, in small notes for buses and taxis.

Set up the wallet and link your card before you leave home, and test one small payment. Treat the payment guide from 2024 as background only, not as a promise for each cash desk in Dengfeng.

Internet, apps and Chinese names

Prepare before you land.

Blocked services and VPNs

The German Foreign Office describes blocked online services in China. It calls the use of a VPN to get around state censorship prohibited and advises against it. This site does not recommend a product. Plan so that your trip works without foreign services: save offline maps, tickets and addresses on your phone.

Save the names in Chinese

Show these to a driver or at a counter. Shaolin Temple: 少林寺. Zhengzhou Central Bus Station: 郑州汽车中心站. Dengfeng West Bus Station: 登封西客车站. The car park for the direct bus is P3.

Taxis

The UK Foreign Office advises marked taxis with a meter and a receipt, and against unmarked cars. No fixed ride-hailing fares for Dengfeng are published. Ask the price or the meter before you start. How you get from Zhengzhou is on the getting there page.
