Three bases for a Shaolin trip
The Shaolin Temple is about 13 km northwest of Dengfeng, a figure from a 2019 provincial page. Many visitors sleep in Dengfeng to start early. Others stay in Zhengzhou, where the airport and the main rail stations are, and go out by direct bus. Luoyang makes sense if the Longmen Grottoes are your main goal.
This page does not rank hotels and shows no current room rates. Prices, availability and whether a property takes foreign guests change, so confirm those with the property before you pay. The site is independent and has no link to any hotel, the temple or the scenic area.

Dengfeng, Zhengzhou or Luoyang
What each base gives you.
| Base | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dengfeng | Early starts at Shaolin, the Songyang Academy, the Zhongyue Temple and the Songyue Pagoda. The bus to Shaolin leaves from Dengfeng West Bus Station along the G207 road. | Smaller town. Walking distance from a given hotel to a bus or sight is not published, so check the map. |
| Zhengzhou | Flights, high-speed rail, a wider choice of hotels, and the direct bus to Shaolin. | About two hours each way. The published departures are 07:30, 08:00, 08:30 and 09:40, with returns at 14:30, 15:30, 16:30 and 17:30. |
| Luoyang | The Longmen Grottoes and the White Horse Temple. Shaolin is reached by the G207 road or the Zheng-Shao-Luo expressway. | Shaolin and Longmen are roughly 55 to 60 km apart, about 1.5 hours by car. Current bus details are not published, so check locally. |
The direct bus timetable is from the line's launch notice of 26 June 2025. It does not show every departure in 2026, so check the current timetable before you go. Tickets were sold through a Zhengzhou transport account on WeChat or a Didi mini program. Details are on the getting there page.

What to check before you book
Questions that matter more than the star rating.
Do they take foreign guests?
Not every Chinese hotel can register foreign passports. Ask before you pay, and bring your original passport to check in. The page on China travel tips covers passports and payment.
Where is the nearest bus?
Ask how far it is to the stop for the Shaolin bus, and whether the property helps with a taxi in the early morning. A taxi should be marked and use a meter, with a receipt.
Taxes, deposits and cancellation
Terms are set by each property and cannot be carried over. Ask about deposits, taxes and cancellation rules in writing.
Timing
Public holidays fill the area. See the best time to visit page for the 2026 holiday dates and book earlier around them.
The city hotel directory
A starting point, not a recommendation.
Hotel names and prices in Dengfeng change often. Compare current offers on booking sites and check that the hotel accepts foreign guests before you pay.
Plan to stay in town and come in to the scenic area for the day.

Staying at a martial arts school
Lodging that comes with a course, not a hotel.
Some schools sell lodging and meals as part of a training course. One school lists, in USD, 70 a day for a shared twin room or 75 for a single room for stays under a month, and 1,270 or 1,320 for one month. The listed price includes training, equipment use, Wi-Fi and three meals a day. The same school offers an airport or station pickup in Zhengzhou for $65. These are one school's published terms, not a market price and not a recommendation.
A course stay is not a hotel room you can book without training. Remember the entry rules too: the visa-free stay is limited to 30 days, and longer courses need a visa that fits the purpose. See martial arts schools before you commit.

Where to stay near Shaolin: frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Dengfeng or Zhengzhou?
Dengfeng suits early starts and several sights. Zhengzhou suits a short trip with a flight or train and a wider hotel choice. The direct bus takes about two hours each way, so a Zhengzhou day trip leaves less time on site.
How far is Dengfeng from the Shaolin Temple?
A 2019 provincial page puts the temple about 13 km northwest of Dengfeng. A bus runs from Dengfeng West Bus Station along the G207 road. The current fare and line number are not published, so ask locally.
Is a school stay the same as a hotel stay?
No. Schools that list lodging sell it together with a training course, with meals and training included. For a plain room, book a hotel in town.
How do I get from Zhengzhou airport to Dengfeng?
Two published sources describe an airport bus to Dengfeng in 2026. One gives CNY 55 (about $8) and four departures, the other estimates about CNY 50 (about $7) and 2 hours 20 minutes in total. Check the current timetable before you go.
Why does this page show no hotel prices?
Rates change daily and differ by date, so compare current offers for your dates directly with the property.
